The Tumblehome Paddlers collected several bags of garbage and three tires along the shores of Killarney Lake, a popular recreational pond in Fredericton, June 8, 2009. These tires are #s 104 and 105. One was still on a rim and full of water to boot, and took a lot of elbow grease and stick-to-it-iveness for these paddlers (Leslie McDougall and Judith Day) to muscle out of the water to shore.

The cleanup was part of the Great Wilderness Cleanup, an initiative launched by paddlers in Ontario that is gaining momentum worldwide. Several bags of beer cans, beach toys and plastic bags, among other junk, were also collected. Here are Tyson Silliker and Cheryl Weekes with tire number 106 on board.

We all got a little wet and plenty dirty, but it was worth it, to enjoy each other's company and to feel good about participating in the cleanup.

Several canoe-loads of common garbage, including three tires, were hauled from the shorelines of Killarney Lake, Fredericton, on June 8, by members of the Tumblehome Paddlers Club. The Club is an association of local paddlers who share a concern for boating and our environment.

As always, the tires were taken to the lot of a local tire retail outlet. They will be trucked to a tire recycling factory in nearby Minto, NB, and recycled into various consumer articles, like bedding for livestock, etc. The garbage was managed by the City of Fredericton.
